Hormone Therapy Q & A

What is hormone therapy?

Women ages 20-40 often lose 50% of their testosterone, and men over age 30 lose about 3% of their body’s natural testosterone each year. Hormone therapy is a safe and effective way to balance hormone levels in men and women.

Hormone therapy uses bioidentical hormones derived from natural plant sources to replicate your body’s natural testosterone and other hormones. To introduce hormones into your body, your nurse practitioner inserts pellets just beneath the skin to release small hormone dosages over time.

What are the benefits of hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy helps alleviate the myriad of health issues that develop from hormone imbalance. Hormone therapy pellets can:

  • Decrease body fat
  • Increase muscle strength
  • Improve mental clarity, concentration, and memory
  • Increase energy
  • Relieve anxiety and depression
  • Increase bone density
  • Improve sex drive and sexual dysfunction
  • Reduce joint pain
  • Improve your overall well-being

In women, hormone therapy can reduce symptoms associated with menopause, such as poor sleep, migraines, vaginal dryness, and urinary incontinence.

What should I expect during hormone therapy insertion?

After completing a comprehensive physical exam and reviewing lab tests and your medical history, a provider at Enrich Family Practice determines the right hormone dosage for you. You’ll receive hormone therapy pellets customized to your individual hormone levels.

During pellet insertion, your nurse practitioner uses local anesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable. She creates a tiny incision, inserts hormone pellets subcutaneously under the fatty lining in your upper buttocks, and closes the incision with sterile tape strips. It’s a simple in-office procedure that takes just 4-10 minutes to complete.

You shouldn’t feel the implants under your skin as they slowly release physiologic doses of hormones into your body. Hormone pellets usually last longer in men (about 9 months) than women, but it depends on your activity level. Your nurse practitioner lets you know when it’s time for additional hormone therapy treatments based on your symptoms and lab results.

If fatigue, low muscle tone, poor sex drive, or menopausal symptoms hinder your quality of life, schedule an appointment with Enrich Family Practice by phone or online to find out if hormone replacement therapy is right for you.
